If you are entering a contest, most of the following will apply, but be sure to check the specific rules for that contest! If you are entering a contest sponsored by Echoes, you can follow our simplified contest manuscript guidelines.

This page covers the following topics:
  1. Paper
  2. Margins and spacing
  3. Typeface ("font")
  4. Titles, headers, and page numbers
  5. Cover letters
  6. Simultaneous submissions
  7. Photocopies
  8. Self-Addressed Stamped Envelope ("SASE")

Margins andspacing:

Typeface("font"):

(For Echoes please use Courier, Letter Gothic, or an equivalent typeface.)

The right combination of type and margins yields approximately 250 words per page.

Titlesand headers:

Coverletter:

In general, you should enclose a cover letter with any submission. Be sure to note if the work, or any part of it, has ever been published, or if there may be any restrictions on when it could be published.

At Echoes, we are interested in the people who send us their stories and poems, and an indication of your level of experience can be helpful when responding to you. Please send a cover note telling us a little bit about yourself, what inspired you to write the story or poetry you are submitting, and where you heard about Echoes. (We are not interested in a list of publication credits)

Note: Contests usually have an entry form and do not require a cover letter.

Simultaneoussubmissions:

If you wish to send your manuscript to morethan one publication at a time, be sure they all acceptsimultaneous submissions, and be sure to note in the cover letterthat you are submitting it to other publishers also. (No need tomention names, of course.)

Remember, Echoes does not accept simultaneous submissions.

Editors invest considerable time reviewing and evaluating your work. It is not fair to submit work that may then turn out to be unavailable. Please do not send any manuscript that is or will be considered by another publisher before you hear from us.

Photocopies:Full-size photocopies are OK, aslong as they are clear and easy-to-read (no blurry outlines, no blackspots sprinkled around.) Remember, the people who read yourmanuscript do a lot of reading!

Computerfiles:Echoes welcomes accept computer files and e-mailsubmissions -- please read the guidelines on submittingcomputer files

Self-AddressedStamped Envelope ("SASE"):Whenever you submit material, enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope -- #10 (business size)or larger -- unless that publication's guidelines state that nosubmissions will be returned or acknowledged. If you want yourmanuscript returned, make sure there is enough postage for yourmanuscript and the editors' reply. If you are outside the UnitedStates, enclose International Reply Coupons or use U.S.Postage. (Yes, this applies toCanada too!)

NOTE: We receive envelopes with theaddresses all over the place -- even in the top left quadrant ! Whenyou address your envelope, please put your address somewhere in thelower right area of the envelope.

Note: Manuscripts sent to contestsare generally not returnable. Ifyou are submitting to a contest sponsored by Echoes, you can use oursimplified contest manuscriptguidelines.
